about

New England legend Scott Helland, whose previous bands were punk gods Deep Wound (also featuring Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and Lou Barlow) and hardcore aggressors Outpatients, shocked his audience by turning to the introspective cadences of acoustic music as a solo artist. Several of his albums have been classified as New Age, which isn't entirely accurate. His music is deeply meditative but there's a pointed intensity to Helland's fretwork and Catapult is an excellent example of his skilled Celtic-influenced playing. From here, he would form Frenchy and the Punk with French-born British muse Samantha Stephenson. This is a step in that direction. The songs have a medieval quality to them and the titles suggest a serious intertest in another time and place. One need not be an expert at history to enjoy the flow of the tunes. "Shining Knights in Dented Armor", "Catapult to the Highlands" and " Myth of the Legendary Folktale" are stirring instrumentals that need no introduction. Just a set of ears to enjoy Helland's immense talents.
